For as long as I can remember I have wanted to live in Savannah. I’m not sure when it started. I think I was born loving Savannah much like my Mother. It’s sweet and rich in its southern ways. It’s young and eclectic, progressive and dog loving, fun and breathtakingly beautiful. Savannah is full of history with gorgeous architecture and century year old trees covered in Spanish moss (or Spanish mafia as I remember calling it as a kid). The cobblestone streets are interesting to look at and even more interesting to walk on in heels or after a few drinks. The parks and squares are peaceful and welcoming, and one in particular will be the site of the Thompson Melton wedding this fall (see Forsyth park below).
This city is incredibly haunted and even if you don’t believe in that kind of thing the ghost tours of the city are always a lot of fun. If you ask my future sister in law our house is creepy and probably haunted too. Although we have yet to experience any paranormal activity I’m secretly hoping the house is haunted with a friendly spirit. Maybe an old southern grandmother who cooks and cleans while we sleep and makes Jason fried chicken every now and then since I don’t know how to fry. Yes, you read that correctly I am from the south and I do not know how to fry. So what? At least my house never smells like chicken fat.
So luckily the future hubs loves Savannah as much as I do. Maybe he loves it for different reasons, such as all of the Irish pubs, the ridiculous St. Patty’s week day celebration, and his beloved rugby team; The Savannah Shamrocks. Nonetheless Savannah is where we decided to set up shop. After he twisted my arm to convince me to stay here we started the house hunt. For most couples picking out a home together is enjoyable but for us it was bittersweet. Jason was in Iraq and I was in Atlanta (which is a 4 hour drive from Savannah). So our search began on the internet. We sent each other listing after listing…..after listing, with no luck. Then Jay sent me a listing for a home in the historic downtown district that was built in 1900. It more than peaked my interest. This is THE house that I have always wanted but also the one that we would not be able to afford. I fell in love with the pictures and even more so the price. It was a foreclosure and had been vacant for over a year . We thought it was too good to be true, so I called the listing agent and made an appointment to see it the next day. I loaded up the Pit Bulls and we made the 4 hour drive to see the Victorian mini-mansion.
ROAD TRIP!
I arrived well before the agent did and walked to the end of the street to check out the neighborhood. I took pictures of the neighbor’s houses, the trees, the neighborhood cats, and anything else that would help give Jason an idea of the block. The house was a bumble bee shade of yellow and the paint was chipping off of every inch. Upon our agents arrival I did the walk through and absolutely fell in love. I felt at home and immediately started envisioning our furniture (or lack thereof) in each room. I looked past the paint chipping off the walls, the holes that had been repaired in the ceiling, the instability of the first three stairs, and the God awful vines in the back yard that had literally taken over the house and worked their way in through the windows. Despite all of the flaws it was perfect for us. We started the process to purchase our own little piece of Savannah.
First look at the house
Welcome to the Jungle
I sent Jason the most ridiculous pictures of the most random things in the hopes that he would love it too. Thankfully he did. I was so nervous as to what he would say when he actually got home and saw it in person. What if he came home and hated it the week before we were supposed to close? Oh the anxiety! Well after a tearful and what seemed to be never ending 6 months we became homeowners!
We certainly have our work cut out for us. The hardwoods are original to the home and need to be stained and sealed. There is not a wall in the house that does not need to be spackled and or painted. And even though our projects seem never ending at this point, we are so excited to give our home back some of the dignity that it deserves!
Baby got a new coat of paint!....
Stay tuned for more updates from the lovely city of Savannah!
